DC Comics vs. Manga

Something I missed from January: DC Comics had a promotion where they would give one of the 52 #1 issues in exchange for Volume 1 of a manga.

It shows the Justice League, with Cyborg in the center, holding an American flag.

“ROBAMA WANTS YOU TO BUY AMERICAN!”

Robama? Seriously? How does Cyborg have anything to do with Obama, aside from race? Last I checked, being a former athlete turned cyborg superhero is not the same as being president.

And I find it hilarious that DC was hoping to expand their audience with the relaunch with ads like this.

Superhero comics are mainly aimed towards men, with few if any aimed specifically at women. There is a female audience, but they’re a definite minority. There are tons of manga aimed directly at women and girls, and quite a few have a large female audience even though they’re aimed at males.

Nice job alienating your potential audience, DC.

As a fan of both manga and American comics, I have this to say to DC: You can have my copies of Death Note, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Full Metal Alchemist over my dead body.
