It’s been announced that their will be an animated film based on the JLA: Tower of Babel storyline that will be released next year. It’s been given the tenative title of Justice League: Doom. The script was adapted and written by Dwayne McDuffie, before his tragic death.
The “Tower of Babel” storyline is an excellent one. The basic plot is this: Batman has plans to take down each of the Justice League should they ever become a threat (in case of mind control, sudden criminal insanity, etc.). He doesn’t bother to tell them about this, and the plans are stolen. They are used against the Justice League. However, the plans are also a distraction to prevent the League from preventing the deaths of millions (if not billions) of people.
When I bought the TPB, the person who sold it praised it because it “shows why Batman needs to be a member of the League.” I find this amusing, since the main problems in the story are Batman’s fault. The story humanizes Batman a great deal, showing how badly he can screw up. The League is justifiably ticked by Batman’s actions, so his failings aren’t simply swept under the rug.
I hope they keep the same Justice League roster as the original storyline, because the way the characters played off each other and reacted was a huge part of what made the story great. Admittedly, I’m biased, since I’m a huge Plastic Man fan, and I would love to see him in a film. I’m eagerly awaiting this film’s release.
